Over the course of the 12-week study, the water-drinkers lost five more pounds than the non-water drinkers.

Researchers from the Netherlands set out to prove the common notion that dehydration is considered to result in headaches and they studied 18 patients with migraine headaches. One group was given a placebo and the other was instructed to increase their daily intake of water. In the group that increased their intake of water by a quart a day, the total overall hours of headache were reduced by 21 hours in 2 weeks.

An easy way to increase the water intake is to fill a container with a quart of water and bring it along to drink throughout the day. Avoid tap water and use the filtered, spring or distilled varieties. Eating more raw fruits and vegetables is another key strategy; not only because of their high water content, but because of the plant chemicals they contain. Known as “phytochemicals”, these active nutrients provide the colors of the plants and give benefits to the heart, eyes, hormones and more.

Introduction: Following animal experiments where correlations were observed between blood magnesium level and noise-induced permanent hearing threshold shifts, we tested the prophylactic (disease preventing) effect of magnesium in human subjects exposed to hazardous noise.

Methods: Subjects were 300 young, healthy, and normal-hearing recruits who underwent 2 months of basic military training. This training necessarily included repeated exposures to high levels of impulse noises while using ear plugs. During this placebo-controlled study, each subject received daily an additional drink containing either 167 mg magnesium aspartate or a similar quantity of placebo.

Results: Noise induced hearing damage was significantly more frequent and more severe in the placebo group than in the magnesium group, and was correlated to the magnesium content of red blood cells. Long-term intake of a small dose of oral magnesium was not accompanied by any notable side effect.

Concluslon: This study may introduce a significant natural agent for the reduction of hearing damages in a noise-exposed population.

Researchers at King’s College London and the University of East Anglia have discovered that women who consume a diet high in vegetables such as garlic, onions and leeks, have lower levels of hip osteoarthritis.  These vegetables are high in sulfur.

The findings, published in the Musculoskeletal Disorders journal, not only highlight the possible effects of diet in protecting against osteoarthritis, but also show the potential for using compounds found in garlic to develop treatments for the condition.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in adults, and women are more likely to develop it than men. It causes pain and disability by affecting the hip, knees and spine in the middle-aged and elderly population. Currently there is no effective treatment other than pain relief and, ultimately, joint replacement.

The study, funded by Arthritis Research UK, the Wellcome Trust and Dunhill Medical Trust, looked at over 1,000 healthy female twins, many of whom had no symptoms of arthritis.

The team carried out a detailed assessment of the diet patterns of the twins and analyzed these alongside x-ray images, which captured the extent of early osteoarthritis in the participants’ hips, knees and spine.

They found that in those who consumed a healthy diet with a high intake of fruit and vegetables, particularly high-sulfur ones such as garlic, there was less evidence of early osteoarthritis in the hip joint.

They also found that that a certain compound in garlic limits the amount of cartilage-damaging enzymes when introduced to a human cartilage cell-line in the laboratory.

Dr Frances Williams, lead author from the Department of Twin Research at King’s College London, says: “While we don’t yet know if eating garlic will lead to high levels of this component in the joint, these findings may point the way towards future treatments and prevention of hip osteoarthritis.”

Research:  Beauty Sleep — Experimental Study on the Perceived Health and Attractiveness of Sleep Deprived People

If you want to look attractive and healthy, the best thing you can do is get a good night’s sleep, according to research from an article published on the website of the British Medical Journal.

For the first time, say the authors, there is scientific backing for the concept of beauty sleep.

The study, led by John Axelsson from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, investigated the relationship between sleep and the perceptions other people have of our attractiveness and health. The authors believe this research is important in today’s 24 hour society, with the number of people suffering from sleep disorders and disturbed sleep on the rise.

Twenty-three participants between the ages of 18 to 31 took part in the study. They were photographed between 2pm and 3pm on two occasions, once after normal sleep and once after being deprived of sleep. Smokers were excluded from the research and no alcohol was allowed for two days prior to the experiment.

The photographs were taken in a well-lit room and the distance to the camera was fixed. During both photography sessions participants wore no make-up, had their hair loose (combed back if they had long hair) and underwent similar cleaning or shaving procedures. They were asked to have a relaxed, neutral facial expression for both photos.

Sixty-five observers, who were blinded to the sleep status of the subjects, rated the photographs for attractiveness, a pleasing or non-pleasing appearance, and whether the individuals looked healthy/unhealthy or tired/not tired.  The observers judged the faces of the sleep-deprived participants as less healthy, less attractive, and more tired.

The researchers concluded that the facial signals of sleep deprived people affect facial appearance, and judgments of attractiveness, pleasing appearance, health and tiredness. These signs are sufficient for others to judge them as less healthy and less attractive, lending the first scientific support to the concept of “beauty sleep”.

The average age of natural menopause, which is the point of a woman’s last menstrual period, is 51. The Women’s Health Initiative study, which followed 16,608 women being given hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopause symptoms, discovered a high risk of breast cancer, coronary heart disease and stroke from the use of these drugs.

A placebo-controlled study by the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom suggests that higher levels of omega-3 (DHA), the group of fatty acids found in algae and seafood, are associated with better sleep. The researchers explored whether 16 weeks of daily 600 mg. supplements of algae sources would improve the sleep of 362 children.

The children who took part in the study were not selected for sleep problems, but were all struggling readers at a mainstream primary school. At the outset, the parents filled in a child sleep questionnaire, which revealed that 40% of the children in the study suffered from regular sleep disturbances. Of the children rated as having poor sleep, the researchers fitted wrist sensors to 43 of them to monitor their movements in bed over five nights.

This exploratory study showed that the children on a course of daily supplements of omega-3 had nearly one hour (58 minutes) more sleep and seven fewer waking episodes per night compared with the children taking the corn or soybean placebo.  The findings are due to be published in the Journal of Sleep Research.

A healthy supplement similar to the acidophilus used in yogurt has been found in a Canadian study to help overweight women to lose weight and keep it off.

Known as “probiotics”, these healthy bacteria in the intestine are “pro” or beneficial to the health of the body.  They stimulate the immune system to be stronger, keep the stomach and bowels healthy, and help urinary health.  In addition, a 2006 StanfordUniversity study found that obese people have different gut bacteria than normal-weighted people — a first indication that gut bacteria can play a role in overall weight.

The StanfordUniversity research has now spurred a new study, done by a team of researchers at the University of Laval in QuebecCanada.  Headed by Professor Angelo Tremblay, the researchers sought to confirm the premise that consuming probiotics could help reset the balance of intestinal flora in favor of those that promote a healthy weight.  It may be that a diet high in fat and low in fiber leads to certain bacteria flourishing at the expense of others.  They recruited 125 overweight people to test this theory.

During the first 12-week period of the Canadian study, the subjects underwent a weight-loss diet.  This was followed by a 12-week period aimed at maintaining their body weight.  Throughout the entire 24 weeks, half of the subjects took two pills daily containing probiotics, while the other half received placebos.  After the 12-week dieting period, there was an average weight loss of 8.8 pounds in the women in the probiotics group and 5.7 pounds for women in the placebo group.

The interesting difference is that at the end of the 12-week maintenance period, the weight of the women in the placebo group stayed the same, but the probiotics group continued to lose weight – a total of 11.5 pounds per person.  Upon testing, these women demonstrated having a drop in an appetite-regulating hormone, as well as less of the intestinal bacteria related to obesity.

Professor Tremblay concludes that probiotics may make the intestinal wall stronger and more able to prevent inflammatory substances from passing into the intestine and entering the bloodstream.  Those substances and molecules that can lead to diabetes and obesity.  He believes that several types of the probiotics found in yogurt and supplements can have a similar effect.  Their study was published in the British Journal of Nutrition.
