Anyone who has experienced a bladder infection can attest to the unpleasant symptoms of lower abdomen pain, a burning feeling during urination, an urgency to urinate frequently, and possibly cloudy urine. Both women and men can develop bladder infections.
A couple of good tips would be to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day, especially chlorine-free (non-tap) water, and to decrease the amount of refined white sugar in the diet.
Regarding white sugar, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that when healthy volunteers consumed a large amount of refined sugar, their immune system’s white blood cells had an impaired ability to destroy bacteria for at least five hours.
Antibiotics are the standard medical treatment for bladder infections, and while they are sometimes necessary, those who do not want to regularly use antibiotics have the option of benefiting from a well-documented nutritional remedy.
Cranberry concentrate in capsule form, together with cranberry juice, can be extremely helpful. Cranberry makes the urine more acidic and creates an environment which is hard for bacteria to live in. It has the unique ability to interfere with bacteria establishing a foothold on the bladder wall and when taken regularly, especially in capsule form, it can help to break the cycle of repeated bladder infections.
One research study with women who had a history of recurring bladder infections, found that daily treatment with cranberry concentrate capsules (400 mg twice per day) for three months, significantly reduced the recurrence of urinary tract infections. Drinking cranberry juice is also helpful, but remember to drink a natural cranberry juice that is unsweetened or sweetened from natural fruit sources, rather a cranberry juice cocktail sweetened with white sugar.

A recent study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition has found that eating 1.5 ounces of lightly salted, dry-roasted almonds each day (about 35 almonds) reduced overall hunger, did not affect body weight, and helped the participants to meet their ideal daily intake of Vitamin E.
With the majority of Americans eating more and more snacks, it’s a great thing to find a snack that doesn’t result in weight gain and that also provides nutritional benefits.
The test divided 137 people into five groups: One group ate no nuts or seeds, another group ate almonds with breakfast, another ate them with lunch, the next group ate them alone as a mid-morning snack, and the last group ate them as a mid-afternoon snack.
An interesting aspect of the study is that the participants were people with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes. Eating almonds lowered their blood sugar levels after meals, especially for the in between meal “snack” groups. When consumed as snacks, the almonds also reduced hunger at regular meals.
Richard Mattes PhD, professor of nutrition science at PurdueUniversity in Indiana, and the lead researcher of the study says: “This research suggests that almonds may be a good snack option, especially for those concerned about weight.” The study shows that almonds can increase healthy fat and Vitamin E intake while avoiding weight gain, despite the increase in calories from eating them.

A healthy supplement similar to the acidophilus used in yogurt has been found in a Canadian study to help overweight women to lose weight and keep it off.
Known as “probiotics”, these healthy bacteria in the intestine are “pro” or beneficial to the health of the body. They stimulate the immune system to be stronger, keep the stomach and bowels healthy, and help urinary health. In addition, a 2006 StanfordUniversity study found that obese people have different gut bacteria than normal-weighted people — a first indication that gut bacteria can play a role in overall weight.
The StanfordUniversity research has now spurred a new study, done by a team of researchers at the University of Laval in QuebecCanada. Headed by Professor Angelo Tremblay, the researchers sought to confirm the premise that consuming probiotics could help reset the balance of intestinal flora in favor of those that promote a healthy weight. It may be that a diet high in fat and low in fiber leads to certain bacteria flourishing at the expense of others. They recruited 125 overweight people to test this theory.
During the first 12-week period of the Canadian study, the subjects underwent a weight-loss diet. This was followed by a 12-week period aimed at maintaining their body weight. Throughout the entire 24 weeks, half of the subjects took two pills daily containing probiotics, while the other half received placebos. After the 12-week dieting period, there was an average weight loss of 8.8 pounds in the women in the probiotics group and 5.7 pounds for women in the placebo group.
The interesting difference is that at the end of the 12-week maintenance period, the weight of the women in the placebo group stayed the same, but the probiotics group continued to lose weight – a total of 11.5 pounds per person. Upon testing, these women demonstrated having a drop in an appetite-regulating hormone, as well as less of the intestinal bacteria related to obesity.
Professor Tremblay concludes that probiotics may make the intestinal wall stronger and more able to prevent inflammatory substances from passing into the intestine and entering the bloodstream. Those substances and molecules that can lead to diabetes and obesity. He believes that several types of the probiotics found in yogurt and supplements can have a similar effect. Their study was published in the British Journal of Nutrition.

A full head of beautiful hair and an attractive appearance are highly desirable things. For some people, losing their hair can cause a great deal of stress. Among the causes of hair loss are heredity, hormones, aging, poor circulation, a poor diet, and illness. While drugs can be used to regrow a bit of hair, they also have side effects.
Many health-minded people have spent some time searching for a natural treatment solution that could regrow hair. According to a recent study in the “Archives of Dermatology”, their search just may be over.
Alopecia is a general word that means loss of the hair on the head or baldness. Loss of all of the scalp hair is known as alopecia totalis. Loss of all body hair is termed alopecia universalis. Alopecia areata occurs when the hair falls out in patches.
Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to achieve therapeutic health benefits. It dates back thousands of years to the time of Cleopatra. Essential oils are highly concentrated extracts which are derived from the flowers, leaves, bark and roots of various plants. They contain the plant’s active “lifelike” properties and are said to be the “blood” of the plant.
Among these essential oils are cedarwood, lavender, rosemary and thyme, all of which have been used to treat alopecia for over a hundred years. However, no scientific study has been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of these substances until now.
A revolutionary aromatherapy study was recently published in the “Archives of Dermatology.” Isabelle C. Hay and co-researchers from the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in Scotland studied 86 people with diagnosed alopecia areata. The trial lasted seven months and while the trial took place, the participants stopped using topical (skin) and oral alopecia medications.
Instead, half of the people used a blend of cedarwood (2 drops), lavender (3 drops), rosemary (3 drops) and thyme (2 drops), in a carrier oil mix of jojoba oil (1/2 teaspoon) and grapeseed oil (4 teaspoons). The placebo group used just the carrier oils. Patients were taught to massage the oil into the bare areas of their scalp for two minutes each evening and then wrap a warm towel around their head to enhance absorption.
At the beginning of the study, and again after three and seven months, professional photographs were taken of each patient’s scalp. Changes as seen in the photographs served as the primary outcome measure. Mapping and measuring of the bald patches was also done to determine results.
An impressive 44 percent of the group using the essential oils significantly improved. The average area of hair regrowth with the essential oils was 104 square centimeters, compared with nearly zero for those using the placebo. According to one intriguing photograph provided by the researchers, considerable hair regrowth occurred with one male patient who had both alopecia areata and severe male pattern hair loss.
These results show aromatherapy to be a safe and effective treatment for alopecia areata. The researchers were proud to have successfully applied an evidence-based method to an alternative therapy. Evidently, one or more of the essential oils is able to promote hair regrowth. And unlike standard medical therapies, the essential oils have a very low risk of side effects and are not nearly as costly.

An estimated 50 million U.S. adults (about 1 of 5) report having doctor-diagnosed arthritis. Arthritis is the nation’s most common cause of disability and is defined as painful inflammation, aching, stiffness, and swelling in or around the joints.
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It causes pain, swelling, and reduced motion in joints. It can occur in any joint, but usually it affects hands, knees, hips or spine.
Osteoarthritis breaks down the cartilage in the joints. Cartilage is the slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint. Healthy cartilage absorbs the shock of movement. When cartilage is lost, the bones rub together which can damage the joint.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, which means the arthritis results from the immune system attacking the body’s own tissues. It can affect body parts besides the joints, such as the eyes, mouth and lungs.
A recent study published in the journal “Arthritis” has found that a standardized ginger extract is as effective as the anti-inflammatory drug betamethasone for arthritis, but without the long list of side effects the drug is known for.
This test tube study used cells from joint fluid in three different types of people — those with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and healthy joints. The cells were exposed to special inflammatory triggers in the presence of either betamethasone (an anti-inflammatory drug), ibuprofen (an over the counter pain relief drug such as Advil), or a standardized herbal ginger extract.
The researchers discovered that Ginger extract was an equally effective anti-inflammatory agent as the drug betamethasone in this test. Ginger was able to reduce the cellular causes of joint pain and swelling. This makes it a good natural arthritis remedy, as according to Drugs .com, side effects of betamethasone can include fluid accumulation, glucose intolerance (a pre-diabetic state), nausea, vomiting, eye diseases, adrenal gland suppression, insomnia, nervousness and depression.
Ginger extract is available in capsules, tablets and tea, and fresh ginger root is often available in grocery stores and can be added to cooked dishes.

Soft, supple, clear-looking skin can give a woman or man a youthful glow at any age. There are certain natural vitamins and nutrients that have been tested recently for their healthy benefits to the skin. Before discussing these, let’s take a look at some of the factors that can cause skin dryness, wrinkles, blemishes or spots.
The term “free radicals” has been appearing a lot in the nutritional news lately. These are highly reactive, damaging molecules in the body that have become unbalanced. They attack other molecules and modify their chemical structure. This can create a chain reaction that in essence causes the body to rust from the inside out. Essentially, this is a form of oxidation where oxygen has combined with other substances in the body.
Free radicals come from pollution, smoke, over-exposure to the sun, medications, drugs, infection, stress, toxic chemicals, a poor diet, and also as a byproduct of normal digestion and metabolism. Free radicals play a major role in the aging process, including the skin, and they also contribute to many degenerative diseases such as arthritis, heart disease and cancer.
Antioxidants are substances that can help to neutralize free radicals. Vitamins A, C, and E are well-known antioxidants that defend the body against free radicals and act to repair the damage.
Vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, is a great promoter of youthfulness. Because this antioxidant isn’t produced in the body, it must be gotten from citrus fruits, deeply pigmented vegetables and supplements to maintain healthy levels. Most vitamin C creams perform as antioxidant formulas that protect the skin from damaging free radicals that can lead to wrinkles and prematurely aging skin.
One study from “Skin and Allergy News” showed that topical antioxidants applied to the arms and face reduced lines and wrinkles and also improved skin thickness and elasticity. Vitamin C can also benefit the skin by stimulating the growth of new collagen tissue (the protein fibers that make up connective tissues), which ultimately makes the skin appear smoother and firmer because it’s better supported by strong collagen underneath. Vitamin C products should be used for at least eight weeks to see a difference in the skin.
Vitamins A and E can are also beneficial the skin. In one research study from “Cosmetology”, various skin creams containing 5 percent vitamin A (in the form of retinyl palmitate) and 10 percent vitamin E (in the form of alpha-tocopheral acetate) were shown to increase skin moisturization and cellular renewal and to decrease skin wrinkling.
Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is known as the “Universal Antioxidant”. It is made in small amounts in the body and is found in flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, canola oil, pumpkin seeds and pumpkin seed oil, walnuts and walnut oil. ALA acts as a powerful antioxidant and as a scavenger of both water and fat-soluble free radicals. It spares levels of other antioxidants such as vitamin C and E, which are naturally present in cells and it works to increase their levels.
According to “Skin and Aging”, this ability of ALA to be soluble in both water and fat, is what enables ALA to be rapidly available to skin cells. Use of ALA on the skin helps to promote and develop a supple, youthful and glowing appearance.
Make good use of antioxidants for beautiful skin!

Nutrition Breakthroughs Shares News on Fruits That Help Prevent Diabetes
Posted on: December 9, 2013
Because of the natural sugars in fruit, one might think that it should be avoided in order to prevent diabetes. On the contrary, a recent study recently published in the British Medical Journal has found that greater consumption of specific whole fruits, particularly blueberries, grapes, and apples, is significantly associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes (adult-onset diabetes), whereas greater consumption of fruit juice is associated with a higher risk.
Fruits are very rich in antioxidants, which are substances that protect our tissues from the reactions of oxygen inside the body. Natural processes such as digestion and metabolism create accumulated oxygen reactions that contribute to the aging and disease process. Fruits are good at neutralizing these particles and are also a valuable source of fiber and plant coloring and pigments that have beneficial health effects.
The study on fruit’s effect on diabetes prevention was centered at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. Participants totaled 187,000 people and were women from the Nurses’ Health Study (1984-2008), women from the Nurses’ Health Study II (1991-2009), and men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (1986-2008). They were all free of major diseases at the starting point. Questionnaires were used to collect detailed data.
While blueberries, grapes, and apples provided the most benefits for diabetes prevention, blueberries provided the greatest advantage when three servings per week were eaten — a 26% reduction in the odds to develop diabetes. Servings of cantaloupe on the other hand, increased the risk by 10%, and three servings of fruit juice increased the risk by 8%. Peaches, plums, apricots, prunes, oranges, and strawberries had a neutral risk for diabetes.
So let’s get that fruit out for dessert and eat it for refreshing, nourishing snacks.

There is an ongoing battle between the healthy and unhealthy fats in our diets. We can take steps toward winning the war by eating higher quality fats and the victories will include less joint pain, stronger eyes, fewer heart problems, lower blood pressure, and less cases of asthma and migraines. The healthiest fats include fish and fish oil (salmon, sardines, trout), flax oil, walnuts, almonds, avocados, olive oil, and rice bran oil.
The unhealthy fats, and the ones that can contribute to conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, inflammation and stomach troubles, are fried food, fast food, processed foods like chips, crackers and cookies, baked foods with hydrogenated oil, and eating a lot of full-fat meat and dairy.
Fish oil is widely known for its benefits to heart health and inflammation, but until now, scientists were not entirely sure about its immunity enhancing effects. A new report appearing in an issue of a biology journal has shown that fish oil enhances the activity of a certain kind of blood cell responsible for immunity in the body. Fish oil may actually aid immune responses that help clear out various diseases.
Another study was recently done at the Columbia University Medical Center in New York regarding the use of fish oil for the health of the heart and arteries. Researchers there found that a diet rich in fish oils can prevent the accumulation of fat in the aorta, the main artery leaving the heart. The beneficial actions of fish oil that block cholesterol buildup in the arteries were found even at very high fat intakes.
Scientists at the University of California in Los Angeles compared fish oil with soybean oil for the fat component that was used in feeding tubes for children with stomach failure. The study was titled “Six months of fish oil reverses liver disease in children with intestinal failure.” With the fish oil, nearly 80 percent of the patients experienced a reversal of their liver disease, while only 5 percent of the soybean oil patients saw a reversal. This is a strong statement on the benefits of fish oil for stomach and liver health.
